Dr. Jun-Ing Ker, Program Chair of Industrial Engineering, currently holds the James E. Smith Professorship. Dr. Ker obtained his B.S. degree in Industrial Engineering from Tunghai University (Taiwan) in 1980 and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Industrial Engineering from University of Missouri-Columbia in 1984 and 1989, respectively. Dr. Ker’s broad research interests cover machine vision technologies, quality engineering and Lean-Six Sigma applications in manufacturing and service industries. Since joining Louisiana Tech in 1989, Dr. Ker has secured substantial funding on research projects sponsored by National Science Foundation, the Louisiana State Board of Regents and area industries.

In addition, he has supervised more than 80 senior and graduate design projects that have benefited many industries in and outside Louisiana including Fortune 500 companies such as General Electric, Lockheed Martin, Procter & Gamble, Saint-Gobain and Northrop Grumman. Dr. Ker frequently conducts training workshops to area industries. Recent training workshops in which he was the lead instructor include: Lean Manufacturing Training Workshop (8 hours) and the Six Sigma Green Belt Training Workshop (40 hours) at Mid South Extrusion Co. in Monroe, Louisiana in 2011; Principles of Six Sigma Training Workshop (24 hours) at CenturyLink in Monroe, Louisiana 2014; and Design for Six Sigma Training Workshop (16 hours) at Frymaster in Shreveport, Louisiana 2014.

Recent honors Dr. Ker received include the 2011 Outstanding Team Teaching Award from College of Engineering and Science and 2013 Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE) Outstanding Faculty Advisor Recognition Award for the Southeast Region. Dr. Ker has published over 30 papers in professional journals and peer-reviewed conference proceedings. He also serves as reviewer for Computers and Industrial Engineering, Journal of Computer Engineering and Information Technology, Measurement Science and Technology, and Journal of Sensors. Dr. Ker completed his Professional Engineer registration in the State of Louisiana in 1999 and is a life member of the Institute of Industrial Engineers.
